Quack Remedies: Vin Mariani

(On Mariani Wine or Vin Mariani: a concoction of wine and cocaine that was once much beloved for its, ahem, "stimulating properties.")

Mariani Wine quickly restores health, strength, energy and vitality. Mariani Wine fortifies, strengthens, stimulates and refreshes the body and brain. Hastens convalescence, especially after influenza. His Holiness the Pope writes that he has fully appreciated benificent effects of this tonic wine, and has forwarded to Mr. Mariani as a token of his gratitude a gold medal bearing his august effigy.

For body and brain. Since thirty years all eminent physicians recommend Vin Mariani, the original French coca wine; most popularly used stimulant in hospitals, public and religious institutions everywhere. Nourshes - Fortifies - Refreshes. Strengthens entire system; most agreeable. Effective and lasting renovator of the vital forces. Every test strictly on its own merits will prove its exceptional reputation. Palatable as choices old wines.

Jack the Ripper Action Figure

Being that the Ripper's identity was never discovered, I suppose we can't exactly prove that he didn't look this way, but... really, a peg leg? Woudn't that make his fast escape from the Elizabeth Stride murder a bit impossible? (Not to mention that even in the East End they'd have probably noticed a guy who looked like this... "A man with hideous scars all over his face and a peg leg was seen escaping from the scene -- oh and his bag left a trail of blood clear across town so we know exactly where he went anyway.")

If your heart's set on it, you can get one of the Jack the Ripper figures here.

Death: A Poem

Life's loving brother, indefatigable Death,
Keeps Life alert and young.
Without him, Life's sweet breath,
Hank and unbreathable through healthy lung,
Would sicken Life himself, that, pale
As frighted sky in an eclipse,
His eyes grow blear, his spirits fail,
Smiles vanish from his leaden lips,
And, shuddering in a dull despair,
To see matter's unchecked increase,
Would shriek towards Heaven a piteous prayer
That he might quick decease,
Ere he be suffocated by
His offspring.
They, up piled in monstrous mounds,
Now that they cannot die, —
No longer know or beauty, grace, or bounds;
In unproportioned crowds of lurid life
Pressing each other for more room,
Wrangle in unavailing strife,
Faith and Hope waning in the gloom
Exuded from usurping matter;
The watchful angel no more there to shatter
Its tightening fetters, hopeless age
Wailing in swarms of slow decrepitude,
Impotent to die, and thus elude
The shocks of helpless rage
At its imprisonment on earth, —
Earth in soiled ragged gray enwrapt,
Of its dear greenery unsapt,
Grown to a gross material Hell,
Where never more is heard the knell
Of a new liberating birth;
Boyhood outnumbering childhood, manhood both,
While age, more numerous than all the three,
Gasps in imbecile sloth,
Cursing its heavenly privilege to be.
Banish good Death, and all things soon
In agony would pray
For his recall, to lift them out of swoon,
To free them from deathless decay.
Aye, Heaven's brave minister is he,
The world's unwearied cleanser,
Divine in his ubiquity,
Of freshness and of sweetness the dispenser,
Unresting key that is forever
Opening the bridal bloom of spring!
Triumphant spirit, that dost seem to sever
The body thou renew'st and dost re-wing.
Gross earthy thoughts have made the scythe
Thy symbol, with grim skeleton, and skull
Grinning in mockery of life. A blithe
Ethereal figure, beautiful
As a May-dawn, or peeping pink
Of the first rose, or maiden's blush,
Or boreal joy's ecstatic flush, —
These were fit symbols for earth's beautifier,
Man's lifter to th' angelic choir;
For thou, thou art the link
Twixt life and life. Dear Death! loud hail to thee!
Thou holy handmaid of eternity!
All nature keeps itself alive by dying, —
Seeming to die; bodies even die not,
They do but change; for spirit is ever plying
Creative power; and so from rankest rot
Of matter life upsprings,
Exulting in fresh wings,
Breathing with a new breath
Inbreathed from high beneficence: There Is No Death.

Cupid and Death

A scene from Cupid and Death, from a cheapo kid's choir production. In the story, Cupid and Death have had their arrows switched unknowingly. Here Cupid causes mayhem when a girl is finally wooed by her love.
Nature then comes and mourns the state of things.

The group seems to be from Hungary, and I can't tell if the show was done in Hungarian instead of English, or if they just pronounce the English very badly.

The Tim Burton Report

When I was in 6th grade, the teacher made some mention early in the year that we'd have to do a hero report as a final project. For some reason I liked his idea, and began to work and research this immediately, months before it became any kind of officially assigned project. My chosen hero: Tim Burton.

Now, when I was in 5th grade, The Nightmare Before Christmas has come out; and for a sad kid like me, living at the beach in sunny and happy California, that movie was life-changing. It was one of the first times I had any sense that someone else got it. I became fully obsessed with the film -- as much as Jack was obsessed with Christmas -- and learned everything I could about it. This brought me to learn more about the very interesting people Tim Burton and Danny Elfman; and Tim Burton became my new idol. In imitation of Mr. Burton's wardrobe I took to all black (and maintain that to this day, though presently it's for other reasons.) I made a point of seeing all his movies (my parents even took me on a special trip to see the R-rated Ed Wood when it was new) and I succeeded in finding a copy of Frankenweenie back when that was no easy task.

So I was quite happy for my excuse to learn even more about Mr. Tim Burton. This was essentially before the internet (I knew of only one family that had it, at that time) so, I did things like write to Premier Magazine for any articles they had about Tim Burton, and had to read up on other articles via microfiche at libraries. By the end I had about a 50 page report on the man.

And then, before the end of the year, my dumb parents went and decided we would move to New Mexico, meaning the project was rendered null. The new school in Santa Fe did not have these hero reports on their curriculum.

However, in one of the few favorable stories I have about a teacher (Mr. Keller was the guy -- he was one of the better ones I've had) I was permitted, the day before leaving California, to give a special presentation of my practically-finished report, which ran past the bell; Mr. Keller even had the courtesy to detain all the other students to hear the extra 20 minutes of my babbling on about Tim Burton and all his accomplishments.

While I'd not call Burton my hero any longer (I think the gentleman peaked some time around Ed Wood) I cannot deny his influence upon me which had lasted for all my life so far, and likely will continue me in some manner for the rest of my days.

Yet More Steampunk Shoes

This might be the ultimate steampunk boot -- gaudy and Victorian but still modern and technologically advanced in its appearance.

Pleaser Ankle Boot
Another nice feminine shoe, for those whose persona is a little more delicate.

Tall and more technological looking (even slightly maritime in semblance) but less decorative than the Anna boots above.

More Steampunk Shoes

The hunt goes on! Here are some more of the nicer Steampunk shoe options I've found available:

Spring Step Chill
Another example of the zipper, but so well applied here that it looks almost like a clock gear.

Pikolinos Ginebra
A bit "Western" in look but decorated enough for an Englishwoman.

Steampunk Shoes

I'm a fan of Steampunk fashions, but terribly, I find suitable ladies shoes to be hard to come by. What are passed as Steampunk shoes tend to be so plain or so masculine in design I can't imagine any Victorian would have agreed to let one grace her foot, no matter how ahead of the curve she might be technologically.

Today found me shopping around on the lookout for something suitable. Behold a few of the better options:

They suffer from zippers (not invented till Edwardian era), but I suppose we can tolerate that in the context.

An excellent modernized take on the buttoned boot.

A nice dress-shoe for the Steampunk ball, with a fashionable Japanese motif (even if it is a wee bit racy!)
